Summer Gardens of the Peak District

The Peak District, with its impressive limestone-scarred hills and its deep, wooded dales, has a special atmosphere of its own. We will enjoy an ever-changing backdrop as we tour a sequence of gardens both large and small, at a time of year the trees and plants are at the peak of their growing season, with dark velvety greens punctuated by flashes of vivid colour.

We start at Biddulph Grange, a Victorian gem which takes the visitor on a botanical world tour. A lovely drive through the heart of the Peak District takes us to Haddon Hall, whose ancient walls are covered with climbing roses, before we visit nearby Chatsworth House with its classical parkland and opulent interiors. After a visit to a delightfully old-fashioned cottage garden we drive up into the high peaks of the National Park, enjoying wonderful panoramic views. Our tour concludes at the tranquil woodland garden of Hare Hill.

14 August 2020: Itinerary

We depart by coach from our pick-up points and head for our first visit, the gardens of Biddulph Grange, a rare and exciting survival of a Victorian garden with tunnels and pathways leading the visitor on a miniature tour of the world. The garden boasts rare and exotic planting and architecture from an Egyptian court to elegant Italian terraces, and it even has a unique oriental pagoda garden with its own Great Wall of China.

We continue to our hotel, where dinner is served in the evening.

After breakfast we travel to Haddon Hall, an intensely romantic and hugely historic house set in hilly wooded countryside. The gardens still have some of their 17th Century character, particularly on the upper level where there is a fine knot garden.

We continue with a visit to the gardens of one of England’s most famous stately homes - Chatsworth, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The 105 acre garden has been developed by great garden designers and architects from the 16th century to the present day. It features lime walks and pools to the south, Paxton’s ‘conservative’ wall, an exquisite orangery, a 1.5 acre working kitchen garden and a great yew maze which was planted in 1961.

We return to our hotel for dinner.

Hotel: Best Western Plus Pinewood on Wilmslow Hotel

We start the day at the private garden of Gamesley Fold, a charming, old-fashioned cottage garden with herbaceous borders, shrubs and a profusion of wild flowers and herbs to attract butterflies and wildlife.

From here we set out on a scenic tour of the Peak District National Park, featuring natural rock formations and high peaks, panoramic views and picturesque villages.

Dinner is served in the evening.

Checking out after a leisurely breakfast, a short transfer takes us to our final visit, Hare Hall, where we find a tranquil woodland garden, surrounded by parkland, with a delightful walled garden at its heart. Originally designed by Charles Brocklehurst, this has been restored in line with his vision, and now the white perennial borders sing out in summer.

Following this, our final visit, we return to our original pick-up points.
