RHS Workshop - Rosemoor
The Royal Horticultural Society offers an extensive range of workshops at its showpiece gardens, which provide both theoretical and practical lessons in every aspect of gardening, from pruning and composting to planting and propagation. Their first class facilities provide the ideal teaching environment indoors, and when you step outside into the beautifully maintained garden, you cannot help but be inspired.
This short workshop tour is based around RHS Garden Rosemoor, in the heart of rural North Devon. Our full day workshop here is aimed at beginners but would work equally well as a refresher for more experienced gardeners. It will take a seasonal look at what needs to be done in the garden at this time of year and how you can apply this to your own garden at home.
Our day here is complemented with visits to the fine gardens at Tyntesfield House, featuring flower filled terraces and champion trees, and Ridleys Cheer, where we find a quintessentially English garden designed and planted by the owners.

1 October 2020: Itinerary
Depart by coach from our pick-up points in London, Reading, Swindon and Bristol and head for North Devon. We will break our journey with a visit to Tyntesfield, near Bristol, a fine Victorian country house created by one of England's richest commoners, William Gibbs, who built his fortune on fertiliser. Spiralling turrets and pinnacles adorn the roof, ornate stone carvings and church-like windows complete the Gothic look, giving the feel of a mysterious, fairy tale mansion. Beyond the grandeur that visitors of the Gibbs family would have seen, you will also discover a family home and the evidence of their changing fortunes. Terraced lawns give way to spacious parkland filled with hundreds of trees collected by the family, and a glorious walled kitchen garden beyond. The rolling Somerset hills in the distance create an atmospheric backdrop.
Following our visit we will continue to our comfortable accommodation at the Best Western Tiverton Hotel, Tiverton. Dinner is served in the evening at the hotel.

After breakfast this morning we head for RHS Garden Rosemoor, near Great Torrington in the heart of rural Devon. There are two gardens here, the first an intimate woodland garden dating from the 1960s, which has an excellent collection of trees and shrubs which relish the acid soil – dogwoods, eucryphias, maples, pieris, rhododendrons and vacciniums. The other is a more ambitious affair, which has been developed since the RHS became the owner in 1988, with rose gardens and giant borders, a lake and stream garden and a Mediterranean garden, all impeccably labelled with many interpretation boards.
Our workshop will run from 10.30am to 4.30pm with a break for lunch (included). It will take a seasonal look at what needs to be done in the garden at this time of year and how you can apply this to your own garden at home, covering seed collection and propagation. The first part of the workshop will be held in the Learning Centre before heading out into the garden itself to put theory into practice. There will also be time to explore this wonderful garden on your own and perhaps pick up some inspiration.
Dinner is served in the evening back at our hotel.

Today, following breakfast, we begin head for home, breaking our journey at the private garden of Ridleys Cheer, which contains mixed borders, sweeping lawns and a flight of steps in Cotswold stone greeting the visitor. A small box garden lies beside the house with, behind it, an old apple tree, one of only two trees which pre-date the garden as it is today.
We then return to our original departure points (not Bristol), arriving back in London in the evening.
