Rhine & Moselle River Cruise

A classic river cruise on the celebrated German rivers of the Rhine and the Moselle, featuring historic cities and half-timbered towns, hillsides blanketed with terraced vineyards or topped by imposing fortresses. Waking up to a new vista every morning is always a joy but when it’s a picturesque river port with the promise of a day spent exploring fascinating places it’s doubly special.

We have included three excursions to give you the opportunity to see the best the region has to offer - Reichsburg Castle with its opulent furnishings, the unique half-timbered buildings of Bernkastel-Kues, and Koblenz, where the two great rivers come together at ‘German Corner’.

We sail on the A-ROSA FLORA, a spacious and well-appointed river cruiser accommodating around 180 passengers. On board we will enjoy all-inclusive luxury, with breakfast, lunch and dinner; tea, coffee and snacks and high quality drinks throughout the day. All cabins have a large window to the outside and a full range of amenities such as flat-screen TV, en-suite shower and WC and air-conditioning. Bathrobes, toiletries and mineral water are provided in every cabin and a 15% discount is offered on Spa treatments. Up-grades to upper deck cabins with Juliet balconies are available at a supplement. 26 October 2020: Itinerary

We depart from London St Pancras International on a morning train to Brussels. We continue by train to Cologne in Germany and on arrival transfer the short distance to the quayside where we join our ship.

In the afternoon our cruise begins as we sail south along the Rhine, heading for Cochem on the Moselle, which joins the Rhine at Koblenz. Dinner is served on board in the evening.

Meals include: Dinner

Hotel: A-ROSA FLORA

Arrival is due in Cochem early this morning. After breakfast on board we depart on a shore excursion which includes a walk through the Old Town, famous for its half-timbered houses, past the Capuchin monastery, the parish church of St Martin and the 17th century Rathaus (Town Hall). Minibus transfers are then provided to the splendid Reichsburg Castle which towers above the river, where we enjoy a tour of the neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque rooms with their elaborate furnishings.

In the afternoon we continue our cruise along the Moselle.

Meals include: Breakfast

Hotel: A-ROSA FLORA

We arrive early this morning in Bernkastel-Kues, a picturesque town full of history and culture and famous for its wine. Our shore excursion takes in some of the unique medieval half-timbered buildings, including the Spitzhäuschen, which has been balancing on a foundation that seems much too narrow since the 15th century! Other points of interest include the Renaissance Rathaus from 1608, the Michaela fountain in the market square and the 600-year-old church of St Michael on the river bank. There will also be an opportunity to go ashore in the evening and sample the cosy wine bars as the ship is not due to sail until later this evening.

Hotel: A-ROSA FLORA

This morning sees us waking up in Trier, an ancient Roman city that boasts a wealth of historic monuments, many with UNESCO World Heritage status. An optional excursion is available to book on board takes in the Roman bridge, the oldest in Germany; the amphitheatre, the ruins of the Barbara thermal baths and the throne room of the emperor Constantine the Great. You also see the 18th century Palace of the Electorate and the city’s principal landmark and World Heritage Site, the Porta Nigra.

In the early evening our ship turns around and departs for Koblenz.

Hotel: A-ROSA FLORA

This afternoon we arrive in Koblenz, an ancient city at the confluence (the origin of its name) of the Moselle and the Rhine. Our shore excursion includes a breath-taking cable car ride across the river to the gigantic castle of Ehrenbreitstein, the second largest preserved fortress in Europe. Together with the Deutches Eck (German Corner) at the confluence it forms the northern gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Afterwards we will walk back to the ship through the Old Town. In the late evening we sail for Cologne.

Hotel: A-ROSA FLORA

Following breakfast we disembark the ship in Cologne and transfer to the railway station for train back to Brussels and onward connection by Eurostar to London St Pancras International, where the group will disperse or make onward connections.
