Batsford Arboretum
Summary
With tree expert Tony Russell
Join us at Batsford Arboretum in the heart of the Cotswolds for a ‘tree-mendous’ day out in the company of author and broadcaster Tony Russell, widely regarded as one of Britain’s leading authorities on trees and shrubs in the temperate world.
The collections at Batsford cover a wide range of plants from around the world, with an emphasis on the Far East. There are over 2,850 labelled specimens including about 1,300 different trees, shrubs and bamboo.
Our day here begins with coffee and biscuits whilst Tony Russell welcomes us and gives an introduction to the day. This is followed by a practical Tree Identification session with Tony, demonstrating how leaves, bark and colour can all help distinguish one tree from another. We continue with Tony leading a guided tour of Batsford’s extensive tree collection followed by lunch.
In the afternoon Tony will give us a presentation entitled Ideal Trees for the Garden, useful for those who have taken to gardening in recent times. We are then joined by Batsford’s Head Gardener for a practical tree planting demonstration before we conclude with refreshments. Tony will also present each guest with a young maple tree and a personally signed copy of his book ‘What’s That Tree’, the perfect pocket guide to identifying common British and European trees.
