Treat yourself to an authentic Hogmanay* experience at the comfortable, family run, Woodland House Hotel, in Dumfries, Scotland’s ‘Queen of the South’. Set in a sympathetically restored and extended Grade B-listed Georgian mansion with delightfully traditional yet relaxed surroundings, there’s nowhere better to be to see in the New Year.
On Hogmanay we enjoy a circular tour through the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway, including a stop at the famous ‘book town’ of Wigtown, before the celebrations begin with a glass of fizz followed by a four-course Hogmanay Dinner and live entertainment from a local band, culminating in ‘the bells’ at midnight, welcomed in traditional style by a kilted piper. A leisurely New Year’s Day takes us over the border to Cumbria for a scenic drive along the route of Hadrian’s Wall, perhaps the most impressive of all the Roman remains in Britain.
*the etymology of the Scots word for the last day of the year is obscure but is thought to have French, Celtic or Norse origins.

Day 1 -
We depart from our local pick-up points and head for Dumfries, where there will be some free time to explore this historic city and perhaps visit the Robert Burns House Museum or his Mausoleum, located in the grounds of St Michael’s Church – in a churchyard filled mainly with monuments made of red sandstone its white dome stands out clearly.
In the afternoon we transfer to our comfortable, family-run hotel, the 4-star Woodland House Hotel, set in a B-listed Georgian mansion. Dinner served in the evening.

Day 2 - New Year’s Eve -
After breakfast we set out on a scenic coach tour of Dumfries and Galloway, travelling via Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright to Wigtown, notable for its second-hand bookshops, including The Book Shop, which is Scotland’s largest and the inspiration behind owner Shaun Bythell’s popular books Confessions of a Bookseller and Diary of a Bookseller.
We return to Dumfries via Newton Stewart and New Galloway and there will be time to relax before changing for dinner – kilts are not compulsory for gentlemen but they do add to the sense of occasion and are great fun to wear! The evening’s celebrations begin with a glass of Woodland Fizz followed by a four-course dinner and live musical entertainment provided by a local band. The New Year is welcomed in traditional style by a kilted piper bringing in ‘the bells’ as they are known. The evening traditionally ends with the assembled company linking arms for a rousing rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, whose words come from a poem by Robert Burns.

Day 3 - New Year’s Day -
After a leisurely and restorative breakfast we depart on a relaxing coach tour over the nearby border with England and along the route of Hadrian’s Wall, the largest Roman archaeological feature in Britain, still remarkably intact after some 1,900 years. We will enjoy the stark beauty of the surrounding landscape and (weather permitting) makes stops at some of the most scenic sections, such as Walltown Crags.
Returning to the hotel, we will enjoy dinner once again from the special Hogmanay menu.

Day 4 -
Enjoy your breakfast. Sadly it is time to leave Dumfries today as we head for home, with arrival due at our original departure points during the afternoon.
