Summary

For decades after the Second World War Bulgaria lay firmly behind the Iron Curtain and had little contact with the outside world, but in classical times it prospered through trade with the Near East and was richly endowed with fine cities and monuments. Now this fascinating and hospitable country is opening up once again and we are delighted to be able to visit a wide range of well-preserved archaeological sites, four of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

These are the famous Rila Monastery, set high in the mountains; Boyana Church with its outstanding frescoes; the Horseman rock relief at Madara; the historic town of Nessebar, beautifully preserved with over 80 churches. Further highlights include the Kazanluk Thracian Tomb, Nicopolis ad Istrum, an ancient city site; the Neolithic dwelling houses and Roman mosaics at Stara Zagora and Veliko Tarnovo, the mediaeval capital of Bulgaria with a stunning location above the Yantra river.

Our tour is accompanied by a specialist guide (Clive Warsop in October) as well as a local, English-speaking guide.

Tour highlights:

  • Panoramic tour of Sofia
  • The Madara Horseman, 75ft above ground level
  • The Baths at Odessos, among the best preserved Roman monuments in Bulgaria
  • 4000 years of history at the ancient settlement of Nessbur
  • Remarkable Thracian tombs, some only recently unearthed
  • Rila Monastery, high up in the mountains
  • More UNESCO World Heritage Sites than you can shake a camera at
