Summary

This break to Northumberland explores the best the region has to offer. Home to rugged hills, spectacular seascapes, ancient castles, rolling moorland and bustling cities, this corner of Northeast England has something for everyone. During our break we explore the Holy Island of Lindisfarne we the 16th century Lindisfarne Castle is perched atop a rocky crag and was originally a Tudor fort before it was converted into a private house in 1903 by the young Edwin Lutyens. The famous Benedictine Lindisfarne Priory built during the late 11th century was one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England. We also visit the second largest inhabited castle in England – Alnwick Castle, it has been in the possession of the Percy family since 1309 and the castle houses an exquisite collection of art treasures, including the finest examples of Italian paintings in the north of England. Another highlight is Britain’s most significant Roman sites Hadrian’s Wall as well as one of the best-preserved Roman cavalry forts – Chester’s Fort and Vindolanda a Roman auxiliary fort. We will also explore the university city of Durham, home to a wide array of historical buildings including Crook Hall, the Norman Castle and the Romanesque Durham Cathedral.
