Trevor Edwards celebrates being a self-employed Horticulturist for 50yrs

In his early working life Trevor was a fully Indentured Apprentice with ICI in his hometown of Carrickfergus. Subsequently he joined the Design Office team as an engineering Draftsman. On leaving ICI he worked as a Technical Advisor for a specialist Welding company before spending a few years in the Construction Industry. On the 4th of April 1976 he became self employed in the grounds maintenance sector of landscaping! Shortly afterwards he Opened what at the time was described as a Garden Shop – the title Garden Centre had not been invented! When asked what his thinking was, he says ‘my resolve was that the retail Garden Shop would offer customers All things required for use in the Garden’.
For the next 25 years, he operated Kragfergus G C which later became Trevor Edwards Garden Centre in Scotch Quarter, Carrickfergus.
During this period, he also ran an old-fashioned Vinyl Record Shop (before CDs) in West Street. In the exciting days of Pink Floyd, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Motorhead, Dolly Parton, John Denver and Glen Campbell etc. The shop known as KragTrak also became a Concert Ticket shop.
Since 2000 he worked as a Garden Designer & Consultant with a special interest in private garden restoration.
During his career he has featured on TV & Radio programmes.
In 2025 he was the Gardening Consultant for the recording of the BBC NI TV series Greatest Gardens with garden experts Diarmuid Gavin and Carol Klein show casing the gardens of Northen Ireland – the series started broadcasting in March 2026
He took a keen interest in the history of Gardens of Ireland which led to getting involved in what has become known as Garden Tourism.
Now based in North Down, in recent years, he has travelled all over the world as a Garden Tour Manager including Italy, Sicily, Spain, France, USA, Japan, Morocco, Singapore & New Zealand, Grenada, Barbados, Mauritius & Gardens of India’s Golden Triangle.
Garden Tours of Ireland feature regularly in his busy schedule, bringing gardeners form all over the world to visit the wonderful Gardens of the Island of Ireland. He has lectured in many countries on the Gardens of Ireland on behalf of Tourism Ireland and Tourism Northern Ireland to promote Garden Tourism to the Island of Ireland.
During a garden tour in New Zealand, he was christened by a Local Radio Interviewer as The Galloping Gaelic Gardener – a title he quite enjoys!
Hobbies: throughout his whole life he has been a keen sailor/yachtsman. From 1964 he was a member of Carrickfergus Sailing Club and in recent years has been an active member of Royal Ulster Yacht Club. However, in the last decade his garden travels have severely curtailed his love of the sea.

- Director/Trustee of the Northern Ireland Heritage Gardens Trust
- Board Member/Trustee of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council
- Assistant Area Organiser of the National Gardens Scheme in Northern Ireland.
- Member of the Irish Garden Plants Society
- Member of the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland
- Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners
- Freeman of the City of London.

- In the year 2000 he designed the Tourism Ireland Garden at the Philadelphia Flower Show – World’s Largest Indoor Garden Show
- the Area Organiser of the National Gardens Scheme in Northern Ireland from 2020 to 2024
- He was formally a Director/Trustee of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society (now the Ulster Architectural Heritage)
He was a member of the Ulster Tree Committee in the 1980s
