Meet our tour manager Richard Baines

As Curator of Logan Botanic Garden Richard has been responsible for managing and developing the gardens over the last 14 years, considerably enhancing its national and international reputation. He has travelled throughout the world and has even discovered new plant species formally not known to science. We are lucky to call Richard one of our tour managers as he brings not only a wealth of knowledge but a genuine passion for all things plants to his tours which truly enhance our guest’s experience.
Do you remember your first tour?
Yes, I most certainly do. They were a fantastic group from Shrewsbury Gardening Club. We stayed at the excellent Holiday Inn in Dumfries and toured the wonderful gardens of Dumfries and Galloway.
What has been your most memorable moment on a Brightwater tour?
Leading a tour round the Gardens of South Africa, for the friends of RBGE.
In fabulous company, the sights were unforgettable. Whales, penguins, Proteas, Giraffes and of course the panoramic views from Table Mountain.
What’s your favourite thing about leading Brightwater tours?
Meeting new people, many of which have a lifetime of experience and interesting stories and sharing my passion for plants.
Tell us about your favourite place to visit with Brightwater
Andalucia, the cities of Granada & Seville. Steeped in centuries of culture one cannot fail to be impressed with the architecture, landscapes, local cuisine and of course the wall-to-wall sunshine.
What makes a Brightwater tour different to other escorted tours?
They are well organised and can be contextualised to fully meet the needs of a particular group. I also think that the Tour Managers are individuals who go the extra mile to create memories that will last for ever.
Where would be on your must visit list and why?
A return tour to South Africa to experience the rich culture and stunning flora & fauna.
It simply has everything that one could ask for; glorious weather, an amazing flora, unforgettable safaris in the emerging daylight and did I mention the food!
