Snowdrops of East Yorkshire

13th Feb 2026

Key Highlights

  • See a breathtaking variety of Galanthus in Burnby Hall's Edwardian Rock Garden and Walled Garden
  • Walk along the Hutton Cranswick Circular, where snowdrops carpet the rolling countryside
  • Discover the Elizabethan architecture and winter blooms of Burton Agnes Hall
  • Admire the stunning medieval stained glass at the impressive York Minster

Summary

Symbolising new beginnings, hope and the arrival of spring, charming snowdrops are a truly welcome sight after the long winter months. While the rest of nature remains asleep, these delicate flowers are among the first blooms to emerge from the cold winter soil, creating lovely backdrops to revitalising strolls across the country. On this uplifting tour, we focus on scenic East Yorkshire, visiting a number of award-winning gardens as well as the spectacular city of York itself with its fascinating relics of the past. Highlights include Burnby Hall Gardens, winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award on seven consecutive occasions, Sledmere House, where the delightful Galanthus trail frames one of the region's finest country houses beautifully, as well as a memorable walk along the Hutton Cranswick Circular, where blankets of snowdrops cover the beautiful countryside.

Day by Day Itinerary

We depart from our designated pick-up points and travel to our first visit, Burnby Hall Gardens, near the market town of Pocklington. Known as the jewel in East Yorkshire’s crown, these stunning gardens were originally created by Katherine and Major Percy Stewart, who purchased Burnby in 1901. The picturesque lakes are famous for their summertime displays of hardy water lilies, and there is also a contemporary-themed Walled Garden, an Edwardian Rock Garden, an Aviary Garden with a restored Edwardian summer house and a Birch Walk with beautiful birches and seasonal plantings. The Stumpery is a charming addition, influenced by The King’s garden at Highgrove and designed to attract insects and birdlife, with an enchanting hobbit house at its centre. Snowdrops can be seen in the Rock Garden and Walled Garden, where the display showcases a wide variety of Galanthus and focuses on the beauty of the individual plants. Time permitting, the museum is well worth a look, which displays artefacts collected by previous owner Major Stewart, an adventurer who embarked on multiple worldwide tours in the early 1900s.
