Sweden and Gotland in the Footsteps of Carl Linnaeus

Key Highlights

  • A guided tour of the Linnaeus garden and museum
  • Dream Park in Enköping designed by the Dutch designer Piet Oudolf
  • Botanising on the Swedish island of Gotland

Summary

Botanist Carl Linnaeus is the inspiration behind this fascinating tour, featuring lakes and gardens in southern Sweden and the wildflowers and seascapes of the Baltic island of Gotland. We begin on the Swedish mainland touring some historic locations with direct Linnaeus connections in and around Uppsala, including the Linnaeus Garden and Museum and his summer estate at Hammarby, before exploring the beautiful Lakeland area, in particular Lake Vättern, whose beautiful shores are flanked by dense woodlands that stretch miles into the hinterland.

A ferry takes us across the Baltic Sea to island of Gotland, to which Linnaeus led an expedition in 1741. Here among a distinctive landscape of limestone cliffs we will enjoy some excellent botanising opportunities along with a visit to the studio of wildlife illustrator Lars Jonsson before returning to Sweden’s sophisticated capital Stockholm for a relaxing end to the holiday.
