Scotland: The Best Rhododendron Gardens in the World?

From:£895

Summary

Visit the gardens of Galloway in May and one plant species catches the eye ahead of all others – the Rhododendron. Though of course native to eastern Asia and the Hiamalyas, rhododendrons seem to thrive particularly well in the mild climate of south-western Scotland. With over 1,000 species to choose from they have long attracted gardeners for their extravagant show of blossom in the spring, in myriad shades of red, pink and purple. We will see some magnificent specimens as we tour the gardens specially selected for their rhododendron displays, along with azaleas, magnolias, pieris and other flowering shrubs.

    Day by Day Itinerary

We depart from our local pick-up points and head for the private garden at Millhall, Kirkcudbright. This impressive five-acre garden has a large collection of mature shrubs, including over 200 rhododendron species which hopefully will be in full bloom. There are also camellias, hydrangeas and many rare Southern Hemisphere plants. The garden has several interesting paths and is on a hillside running along the rocky shore of the Dee Estuary in Kirkcudbright Bay.

After our visit, we will continue to our accommodation at the 3* Fernhill Hotel in Portpatrick, with its own gardens and stunning views over the village, harbour and the Irish Sea.
