Laphroaig distillery
Laphroaig distillery

The Inner Hebridean island of Islay is synonymous with whisky; indeed if you take a walk down the main street in Bowmore, the heady aroma of malt and fermenting barley carries all around the town. There are now no fewer than nine working distilleries on the island and we will be visiting the newest of these along with three of the most famous and long-established. Islay whisky has a reputation for strong, peaty flavours which can be an acquired taste, but as we will discover there are lighter-tasting Islay whiskies to be enjoyed.

We also take the opportunity to visit Islay’s sparsely populated neighbour Jura, home to a subtly smoky, sherry cask-finished whisky. With a wide range of tastings included this is a tour suitable both for whisky connoisseurs and those who are just getting to know the manifold delights of the ‘water of life’.

3 July 2020: Itinerary

We depart by coach from our pick-up points and head for Kintyre, travelling via Loch Fyne and stopping for lunch (not included) in Inveraray. We catch the Kennacraig to Port Askaig ferry in the afternoon and continue to the adjacent Port Askaig Hotel, the oldest continually licensed premises on the island (dating from the 16th Century), which carries an extensive selection of Islay Malts in addition to a display of old and rare bottles. A welcome glass of local malt whisky is served on arrival. Wine is included with dinner each evening along with an after-dinner malt.

After breakfast we travel to the Ardnahoe Distillery, the most recently opened on the island. After a tour of the distillery we will enjoy a tasting called ‘A Journey Through the Regions’, featuring five different drams with the distinctive characteristics of the various whisky-producing regions of Scotland – an excellent introduction to the world of whisky.

After a visit to the informative Museum of Islay Life and an opportunity for lunch (not included) in Port Charlotte we transfer to the island ‘capital’ of Bowmore for the marquee event of our holiday, the top-of-the–range ‘Vaults Secrets’ tour and tasting at Bowmore Distillery, the oldest on the island. The tour begins with a taste of the limited release Vaults Edition, served in your own Bowmore glass. After a special access behind-the-scenes tour we enjoy a very special cask tasting that comes complete with a tasting set including a 100ml sample to enjoy back at home.

Dinner is served in the evening.

We cross by ferry to the neighbouring island of Jura, an island which has a record of habitation stretching back over 5000 years. The island, with approximately 200 inhabitants, is 30 miles long and 7 miles wide and is a naturalist’s paradise. We will enjoy a scenic tour before visiting the Jura Distillery for a tour and tasting of this smoky yet subtle sherry cask-finished malt.

We return in the afternoon by ferry to Islay, with the rest of the day at leisure and dinner in the evening.

After breakfast we visit the first of two distilleries today, Bruichladdich (pronounced ‘brooch-laddy’, with the ‘ch’ in the back of your throat as in ‘loch’), which produces a range of heavily peated, lightly peated and unpeated single malts. The ‘Warehouse Experience’ tour includes three unique expressions straight from the cask.

In the afternoon it’s the turn of Laphroaig (pronounced ‘la-froig’) to show us what they have been doing since 1815, with a tour followed by a tasting of up to three whiskies of your choice plus a souvenir glass and lanyard.

We return to our hotel for dinner and perhaps a final dram or two in the bar.
