6 October 2019: Itinerary

We depart by coach from our local pick-up points and start our tour at Kellie Castle, home to the Earls of Kellie, which was restored by the Lorimer family in 1878. The oldest tower, dating back to 1360, is said to be haunted but today the castle is a tranquil spot. Visit the old stables, now housing an exhibition on Hew Lorimer's life, or take a stroll in the magical Arts & Crafts garden. But spare a thought for the 5th Earl of Kellie, who hid in the garden for an entire summer in a burnt-out tree stump after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

We continue to our hotel on the outskirts of Dundee, where we enjoy a welcome drink and dinner.

This morning we enjoy a visit to the newly opened V&A Dundee. This landmark museum presents the brilliance of Scottish creativity and the best of design from around the world. The eclectic permanent collection includes such diverse items as swimming costumes, Harris Tweed suits, jute bags, furniture, original artwork from The Beano, architects drawings and shipbuilders’ models, a recreation of a Charles Rennie Mackintosh interior, an Adam mirror and fireplace and a model of the Scott Monument. The building itself is a striking piece of contemporary architecture, with the exterior stonework echoed by wooden panels in the light and spacious interior. Entrance to the temporary exhibition is included and details of this will be announced as soon as they are available. Lunch (not included) is available here.

This afternoon we will visit the McManus Gallery & Museum, where we will discover how Dundee developed throughout the ages from a small settlement into the great city we know today. There are eight different galleries, including ‘Landscapes and Lives’, a journey 400 million years into the past to witness the creation of Dundee's natural landscape, explore the lives of early man and see how a small settlement developed into the Burgh of Dundee, and the ‘Victoria Gallery’, which creates an authentic Victorian Art Gallery experience, with works by Raeburn, Rosetti and the Glasgow Boys amongst others.

Dinner is served in the evening.

After lunch (not included) we travel into the rolling Angus countryside north of Dundee for a visit to Glamis Castle, a stunning architectural treasure and childhood home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The Castle is and has been a royal residence since 1372 and spans more than 600 years of Scottish history. Stories of the Old Pretender, Mary Queen of Scots, Shakespeare and James VI & I, right up to the 20th Century with the childhood stories of The Queen Mother, make a visit to Glamis a magical experience - a guided tour is included.
