Summary
The star of Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Steam Railway, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the most popular heritage railways in the country and also one of the longest, travelling through some glorious scenery in a truly authentic recreation of the golden age of steam. We take the train all the way from Pickering to Whitby, where we visit the town’s newest attraction, a full-size replica of Captain James Cook’s bark Endeavour. While in Yorkshire, we also offer the opportunity to visit the National Railway Museum in York, a mecca for all rail enthusiasts with its unrivalled collection of locomotives, coaches and countless other pieces of railway memorabilia, and enjoy a guided tour at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, one of the most popular gardens in the UK which continues to practice the highest standard of horticulture.
We then take a ride on the famous Settle & Carlisle line, one of the most scenic in England, which has often been threatened with closure yet somehow survives. On arrival in Carlisle, we head for Newcastle, from where we explore the delights of Northumberland. These include the impressive Bamburgh Castle and the award-winning Alnwick Garden. We conclude in the splendidly nostalgic surroundings of the North of England Open Air Museum at Beamish, whose faithfully recreated exhibits include a typical branch line country station with a station building and signal box, along with a goods shed that was formerly part of Alnwick station.
