Walking in the Outer Hebrides
There can be few finer experiences for the keen walker than to set out on a bright and breezy morning with a spring in your step and the prospect of enjoying some of the most spectacular scenery to be seen anywhere in the British Isles. But that is exactly what you can expect on this new opportunity to walk in Hebridean heaven on the island of Harris.
A highly scenic drive through the Highlands and a pleasant sail from Skye takes us to our comfortable hotel in Tarbert, Harris. Over the following three days, we will set out on a series of stimulating walks featuring some of the finest vistas and most fascinating ancient monuments that the Western Isles have to offer. There is a circular walk round the island of Scalpay and its picturesque lighthouse, followed by a stroll along the much-photographed but usually deserted Luskentyre Beach; rambles among the ruins of Carloway Broch and the mesmerising Standing Stones of Callanish, and a challenging but highly rewarding walk from Tarbert with stunning coastal views. So pack your boots, poles and cagoules (just in case) and let’s walk!
Please note a good degree of mobility is required to make the most of this holiday.

Day 1 -
We set off on the coach and head to Skye, stopping en route for refreshments (not included). As we drive across Skye keep an eye out on the left for the Cuillin Mountains, more often than not wreathed in cloud, hence Skye’s nickname ‘The Misty Isle’. We reach Uig in the late afternoon where we board the evening ferry to Tarbert in Harris. On arrival we transfer the very short distance to our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 -
After breakfast we transfer by coach to the island of Scalpay (connected by bridge) and do the circular walk (6.25 miles). The walk takes in a visit to lighthouse, the woodland and lochs of the island.
After our packed lunch we transfer to Luskentyre Beach, claimed to be one of the best beaches in the UK. We have some free time here for a leisurely walk (up to 2.75 miles) or to capture an idyllic photograph with views to the island of Taransay, as featured on the TV reality show ‘Castaway’.
We return to hotel this evening for dinner.
Day 3 -
After breakfast we transfer by coach to the west coast of Lewis and set off on our walk of the Dun Carloway circuit. The walk (3.25 miles) takes us past the Broch, an ancient iron-age stone structure, one of the best examples of its kind as well as over scenic moorland of heather and bracken.
Weather permitting we will enjoy our packed lunches at one of the lovely beaches such as Dalmore or Dalbeag before transferring to the 5000-year-old Standing Stones of Callanish, the most remarkable antiquity in the Hebrides. The walk (2.25 miles) also takes in the two smaller sets of stones, Callanish II and III.
We return to the hotel this evening for dinner.
Day 4 -
No transfers required this morning for those who intend to take on the full length (11.5 miles) of the Urgha and Maraig Circuit. This circular walk takes in the superbly engineered old footpath from Urgha to Rhenigidale, with stunning coastal views, before following a quiet minor road and an old path back to Tarbert. Should anyone wish to follow a shorter length of the circuit, coach transfers can be arranged.
In the evening we can put our feet up and perhaps enjoy a well-earned dram from the superb selection of malt whiskies in our hotel, prior to dinner.
Day 5 -
After a leisurely breakfast and a chance to potter around Tarbert we take the late morning ferry back to Uig. On arrival we drive across Skye once again and return to the mainland by the bridge. We make our way back to the drop off points.
