Pharaohs and Ferraris

6 days From £1,895

21 May 2019

Piedmont, the region of north-west Italy bordering France and Switzerland, is home to a host of captivating castles, gardens and villas. At its heart lies the city of Turin, where our tour is based and where we combine Pharaohs and Ferraris with visits to two fascinating museums - one displaying the wonders of Ancient Egypt, the other celebrating the automotive genius of Italian car design.

Travelling out of the city, we visit some outstanding gardens, such as those at Masino Castle, Villa della Regina and Villa Silvio Pellico, where there is a garden designed by Russell Page. At the Venaria Reale, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the magnificent gardens are complemented by an equally grand baroque palace. Piedmont is renowned for its wine and we will have various encounters with local wineries and their produce, all the while enjoying the spectacular scenery of a region that is surrounded on three sides by the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Alps.

Our tour is guided throughout by Italian specialist Kate Williamson, who will share her enthusiasm for this diverse corner of Italy.

21 May 2019: Itinerary

We depart on a direct flight from London to Turin. On arrival we continue by comfortable coach to our hotel in the city centre. A welcome drink is served on arrival followed by dinner in a nearby local restaurant.

Meals include: Dinner

Hotel: Grand Hotel Sitea, Turin

Today, following breakfast, we are joined by our local guide for a walking tour of the historic centre of Turin and visit the Egyptian Museum, the oldest museum in the world devoted entirely to ancient Egyptian culture, dating back to around 1630.

In the afternoon we transfer by coach to Masino Castle where we will learn about Savoyard culture (Piedmont was part of the Duchy of Savoy) and also contemporary developments in Italian gardening. A captivating aspect of the park is the “Cloud Garden“, (Giardino delle nuvole) deisgned by one of the Italy’s most foremost garden designer, Paolo Pejrone, founder of the Piemontese Garden Academy. Inspired by Russell Page and Roberto Burle Marx, Pejrone has designed gardens in Germany, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Austria, France and the United Kingdom.

Later in the afternoon, we return to the hotel. Dinner is served in a nearby local restaurant in the evening.

Meals include: Breakfast, Dinner

Hotel: Grand Hotel Sitea, Turin

After breakfast we depart for visit to Tenuta Banna Spinola Castle. Twelve miles south of Torino, Tenuta Banna, with the tallest tower in Piedmont, belongs to one of the region's most beautiful estates. It presides over a lake and many small gardens where huge numbers of roses bloom throughout the summer.

We continue to the Villa Silvio Pellico, near Moncalieri and visit the gardens. The villa is neo-gothic mansion (c. 1870) with a magnificent garden designed by Russell Page in the late 1940s, featuring ornamental ponds and a maze, as well as the original 19th century parkland in the ‘English’ style, with its ancient cedars and gentle slopes.

Dinner is served in a local restaurant in the evening.

Hotel: Grand Hotel Sitea, Turin

After breakfast we have a treat for the petrol-heads in the group or indeed anyone who enjoys beautiful objects as we visit the National Automobile Museum in Turin, which has a collection of almost 200 cars from 80 different makers representing eight different countries. Italy is well represented, of course, with some of the earliest Fiats as well as stunning Ferrari and Alfa Romeo racing cars which capture the romance and elegance of the golden age of motor sport.

If drooling over these beauties has left you thirsty, fortunately the next glass of wine is not far off as we drive (sedately) to Acqui Terme and visit the Villa Ottolenghi Wedekind, where will have a light lunch followed by a wine tasting. This is the only example in Italy of a close collaboration between architects, painters, sculptors and patrons giving life to a villa filled with important works of art.

Before we return to the hotel we will have a brief visit to the town of Alba, which dates back to Roman times and is famous for its white truffle, peach and wine production. It is also home to the confectionary group Ferrero - an opportunity to spoil yourself with some hazelnut-based chocolates perhaps?

Dinner will be served at the hotel in the evening.

All meals included

Hotel: Grand Hotel Sitea, Turin

This morning after breakfast we depart by coach for Venaria Reale (a UNESCO World Heritage site), created as hunting lodges and places of pleasure of the Royal Savoy family. The enchanting scenario of the Hall of Diana designed in the 17th century by Amedeo di Castellamonte; the solemn splendour of the Great Gallery and the Church of St. Hubert; the vastness of the 18th century Juvarra Stables designed by Filippo Juvarra – all add up to masterpiece of universal baroque. The gardens are equally magnificent and we will have time to explore these at our own pace.

After this we enjoy a “Merenda Sinoira” at the restaurant here, a light lunch of traditional Piemontese cold meats and cheeses.

In the afternoon we return to Turin, stopping en route at Chieri where we visit a flagship winery and have a wine tasting. Back in Turin we visit the Villa della Regina (Villa of the Queen) which after careful restoration has been reopened to the public. Acting as a dramatic backdrop to the city, it is in the centre of Italianate gardens with pavilions, fountains and agricultural areas once again in production.

After a day of fine food and wine the evening is free to make your own plans for dinner or a light supper, as the case may be.

Meals include: Breakfast, Lunch

Hotel: Grand Hotel Sitea, Turin

After breakfast we must check-out of the hotel, but have the morning free visit the historic squares and buildings of the city: Royal Savoia Palace, Piazza Castello, Piazza Carlo Felice and Mole Antonelliana (entrances not included).
