The hills — not to mention the picture-postcard Salzburg streets — are certainly alive with the sound of music on this tour. Join us as we take in the setting for classic musical the Sound of Music, and the home of one of the world’s foremost musical geniuses, in the sublime setting of the picturesque Austrian Tyrol.
Our focus might be on Oberammergau on this tour, but there’s more to Bavaria than just passion plays and historic pacts — this is the land of storybook castles and dramatic landscapes straight out of a Brothers Grimm fairytale. And just a short hop over the border in Austria, even more beauty awaits — even better, we think we might have found the best way to see it all…
Join us as we hop aboard the Zillertal Steam Railway, clink our complimentary glasses of schnapps and sit back to admire the scenery in comfort and luxury. Taking us from the market town of Jenbach to the chic ski resort of Mayrhofen, which sits in the shadow of the great ‘Hintertux Glacier’, this is one picturesque journey that’s hard to beat.
Even Austria’s urban spaces are devastatingly beautiful, and our day trips to two of its finest cities take in castles, cathedrals, old-town streets and even gilded architecture. Choose from a Mozart- or The Sound of Music-themed excursion on your Salzburg sojourn — whatever you choose, the considerable musical pedigree of this region is abundantly clear.
We then head north through Austria and into Germany for our performance of the Passion Play at Oberammergau. Held only once every ten years, this spectacular event with a huge cast formed exclusively by the townsfolk of Oberammergau is a transcendant treat to be savoured.

12 August 2020: Itinerary
Our first morning on tour sees us embark on an excursion on the historic, narrow-gauge Zillertal Steam Railway. As we travel through stunning Tyrolean scenery from Jenbach to the chic ski resort of Mayrhofen, in the shadow of the great Hintertux Glacier, we are served with a chilled glass of schnapps for an added touch of luxury.
For lunch, we're treated to another jaw-droppingly scenic journey, this time by cable car, to our mountainside restaurant. Afterwards, we return by coach to our hotel, where we regroup for dinner this evening.
All meals included
We're spoilt for choice today as we make our way to Salzburg, with the opportunity to decide between two themed excursions. Classical music aficionados will surely be enticed by the Mozart option, while others will be tempted to see some of the locations from the classic musical The Sound of Music. Both excursions include visits to the castle and Cathedral (lunch not included), and afterwards, we return by coach to our hotel.
Meals include: Breakfast, Dinner
Our morning kicks off with a visit to the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck, including a guided tour of the beautiful old town and a stroll down the famous Maria-Theresien-Strasse, including a stop at Emperor Maximillian I's 'Golden Roof'. After lunch in a local restaurant, (not included) we pay a visit to the vaulted halls of Tratzberg Castle, which has connections with the once-mighty Habsburg dynasty, before returning by coach to our hotel for dinner.
Meals include: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast we bid auf wiedersehen to Austria and guten Tag to Germany, as we transfer to Oberammergau via the ski town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The day's performance of the immersive Passion Play begins at 2:30pm, with a three-hour break for dinner at our hotel.
Meals include: Breakfast, Dinner
Sadly, today is our final day. After breakfast, when no doubt yesterday’s performance will be the topic of conversation, we check out of our hotel and return to Munich airport for our flights home.
