Floriade and a Dutch Bulbfields Cruise
Enjoy a riot of colour among the beautiful bulbfields of Holland. For vibrancy, colour and serious charm nothing quite compares to the sight of not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of flowering bulbs, carpeting the fields in a radiant vision of patterns and patchwork. Here, gardening is not merely a pastime – it’s an art; a spectacular series of natural masterpieces.
In 2022 we will also visit Floriade - held every ten years at a different venue in The Netherlands, Floriade is one of the premier events of the horticultural world. This time the spotlight falls on Almere, near Amsterdam, where a purpose built site has been created to provide a ‘living laboratory’ with inspirational and innovative exhibitions by countries, cities and businesses. There will also be a host of impressive attractions, heaps of art and culture and a unique collection of trees, shrubs and flowers. The theme of this, the seventh iteration of the event, is ‘Growing Green Cities’. With the world’s urban population expanding to 70%, cities will have to find creative, green and sustainable solutions to remain safe, healthy and attractive and these proposed solutions will be central to the exhibits at the 2022 Expo.
As if that wasn’t enticement enough, from Antwerp to Amsterdam we’re all set to tour the bulbfields in style: as part of this trip you’ll enjoy four nights as a guest onboard the sister ships MS Beethoven (April) or the MS La Bohème (May). Our comfortable vessel transports us across rivers and sea, ensuring that our journey is just as special as the destinations it brings us to. Think welcoming cocktails with the crew, falling asleep to the water’s gentle motions, lunches and dinners with complimentary wine and beer, and – of course – the always convivial company of like-minded Brightwater travellers.

Keeping you safe on your next tour
Day 1 -
We depart by Eurostar train from London St Pancras to Brussels where we change trains and continue to Antwerp. On arrival we will be met by our coach and will visit Rubens House, which celebrates the life and work of the brilliant and versatile artist Peter Paul Rubens, and the 200 year-old Botanic Garden, which boasts a substantial number of exceptional trees and shrubs.
We later board our ship, the MS Beethoven, a spacious and well-appointed river cruiser accommodating around 180 passengers. With its large, comfortable forward lounge, a well-stocked bar and a separate restaurant, the ship has a tasteful, relaxed and distinctively French ambience. There is also an attractive, partially-covered sun deck area and the friendly and attentive crew will cater for your every need. The cabins are spacious and well-equipped, with twin berths, shower and toilet, TV. All have windows which offer excellent views, the largest being on the upper deck.
Prior to dinner there will be a welcome cocktail reception with the chance to meet the crew and ask any questions you may have. This evening there will be an opportunity to go ashore and explore this historic Belgian city. We overnight here in Antwerp.
Day 2 -
After breakfast we have a leisurely day on board ship, as we cruise from Antwerp to Rotterdam, crossing the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde, two sheltered inlets off the North Sea. Lunch is served on board.
On arrival in Rotterdam there will be an opportunity to go ashore and explore before enjoying a gala dinner on board.
Day 3 -
This morning we cruise from Rotterdam to Utrecht. After lunch on board, we will depart by coach for a visit to one of the most famous gardens in the world - Keukenhof. This is the bulb grower's magnificent display of all the different tulip, daffodil and hyacinth varieties. Over seven million bulbs are planted annually and around one million visitors pass through it from mid-March to mid-May - it is truly breathtaking.
We rejoin the ship in Amsterdam. Following dinner this evening you are free to explore, alternatively, there will be an optional canal cruise to give you the opportunity to view this spectacular city at night. Journeying through the canals at night is an exhilarating experience and this tour will allow you to see the best of the city (prices to be confirmed). We overnight here in Amsterdam.
Day 4 -
After breakfast on board, we have a full day at Floriade 2022 in Almere, which has been designed by award-winning Dutch architect and urban planner Winy Maas to be a green extension of Amsterdam. With its focus on ‘Green Cities of the Future’ there are four main themes: Green, Food, Energy and Health. Exhibits will demonstrate how cities can be made more attractive and resilient by creating more parks and vertical gardens; the latest ideas for sufficient, healthy and affordable food; solutions and inventions in the field of sustainable energy; and how good food, exercise, flowers, plants and trees can help with life in the city. Additional features include orchard houses and jasmine flower hotels, a restaurant in a rose garden, a lily pond swimming pool and a city arboretum with a walkway of over 2,000 trees, planted according to their botanical name. Botanical contributions around the site will come from growers all over the world and we can expect a riot of colour and inventive planting.
Dinner will be served on board this evening. We once again overnight in Amsterdam.
Day 5 -
After breakfast on board we disembark the ship and spend the morning in Amsterdam, beginning with a visit to the Museum Van Loon, a magnificent canal-side private residence from the Dutch ‘Golden Age’, with a large collection of paintings, fine porcelain and silver. The formal gardens perfectly complement the Classical style of the house.
In the afternoon, we catch the train from Amsterdam Central railway station to Brussels, where we board the Eurostar service to London St Pancras, where we expect to arrive late evening.
