Dutch Bulbfields by Air

Enjoy a symphony of colour with the MS La Boheme and the beautiful bulbfields of Holland. For vibrancy, colour and serious charm nothing quite compares to the sight of not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of flowering bulbs, carpeting the fields in a radiant vision of patterns and patchwork. Here, gardening is not merely a pastime – it’s an art; a spectacular series of natural masterpieces.

The star of the show must be Keukenhof, one of the best and biggest flower gardens in the world, with 7 million bulbs and 800 varieties of tulip creating a kaleidoscope of colour.

There are more tulips to be seen as we travel north of Amsterdam to see the windmills at Zaanse Schans and tour the museums here, which give a fascinating insight to the traditional Dutch way of life.

As if that wasn’t enticement enough, from Amsterdam to Antwerp we’re all set to tour the bulbfields in style: as part of this trip you’ll enjoy four nights as a guest onboard the MS La Boheme. Our comfortable vessel transports us across rivers and sea, ensuring that our journey is just as special as the destinations it brings us to. Think welcoming cocktails with the crew, falling asleep to the water’s gentle motions, lunches and dinners with wine and beer, and – of course – the always convivial company of like-minded Brightwater travellers.

14 April 2019: Itinerary

We depart from London on a direct flight to Amsterdam (flight connections and departures from regional airports are available on request at a supplement). On arrival at Schiphol we will be met and transferred to our ship, the MS Gérard Schmitter, a spacious and well-appointed river cruiser accommodating around 170 passengers. With its large, comfortable forward lounge, a well-stocked bar and a separate restaurant, the ship has a tasteful, relaxed and distinctively French ambience. There is also an attractive, partially-covered sun deck area and the friendly and attentive crew will cater for your every need. The cabins are spacious and well-equipped, with twin berths, shower and toilet, TV. All have windows which offer excellent views, the largest being on the middle and upper decks.

Prior to dinner there will be a welcome cocktail reception with the chance to meet the crew and ask any questions you may have. We overnight here in Amsterdam.

After breakfast on board we spend the day in Amsterdam, beginning with a visit to the Museum Van Loon, a magnificent canal-side private residence from the Dutch ‘Golden Age’, with a large collection of paintings, fine porcelain and silver. The formal gardens perfectly complement the Classical style of the house.

In the afternoon, after lunch on board the ship, we will visit the Rijksmuseum. Its collection of world famous Old Masters is second to none and includes a host of works from the Dutch Golden Age by artists such as Vermeer, Franz Hals and Rembrandt, including his 1642 masterpiece ‘The Nightwatch’.

Depending on how long you choose to spend at the museum, you will have some free time to explore the city. Amsterdam is truly a haven for museum buffs - other museums in the city include the Maritime Museum, the Theatre Museum, the Modern Art Museum and there is even a Tea and Coffee Museum. Visit the De Oude Kerk, one of the many spectacular churches in Amsterdam or stroll through the narrow streets which link the major canals. Here you will find unexpected little shops which specialise in everything from kites to beer.

Following dinner this evening you are free to further explore Amsterdam. Alternatively there will be an optional canal cruise to give you the opportunity to view this spectacular city at night. Journeying through the canals at night is an exhilarating experience and this tour will allow you to see the best of the city (prices to be confirmed). Once again we overnight here in Amsterdam.

This is the bulb grower's magnificent display of all the different tulip, daffodil and hyacinth varieties. Over 6 million bulbs are planted annually and around 1 million visitors pass through it from mid-March to mid-May - it is truly breathtaking. With so much to see we will spend a full day here and a lunch box will be provided.

We rejoin the ship in Rotterdam, where dinner is served in the evening.
