Chart a course and set the propeller going — it’s full steam ahead on our Classic Scottish Steam break! By track and by tide, we discover firsts, lasts, exclusives and superlatives on a unique tour that takes us back to the heady days of the steam era.

Ever wanted to gaze at Britain’s highest mountain? Its shortest river? Or how about the deepest freshwater loch in Europe? On our Classic Scottish Steam Break, you can see them all — and so much more. We even enjoy an encounter with the world’s first rotating boat lift, as well as its last sea-going paddle steamer.

With this in mind, you’ll forgive us if we find it difficult to pin down just one highlight. We begin by riding the Jacobite steam train from Fort William to Mallaig on one of the longest — and most spectacularly scenic — steam-hauled rail journeys in Britain today. Another unforgettable experience is sure to be our journey across the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, a sight immortalised in numerous films, and perhaps most recognisable as part of the route of the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter series.

From the gently sloping beauty of the Argyll hills to the lucid Kyles of Bute – and via multiple famous feats of engineering – there’s simply no better way to explore the many scenic gifts that the Scottish countryside has to offer.

Day 1

We depart from our pick-up points and head to the Falkirk Wheel, the world's first rotating boat lift, which connects the Forth and Clyde to the Union Canal. This revolutionary structure was opened in 2002, reuniting these historic waterways for the first time since the 1930s. A truly modern marvel. From here we continue on to our hotel, where we unwind over a welcome dinner and drinks as a group.

Day 2

An early start brings us to Fort William, where board the legendary Jacobite, a steam train which wends through the Highlands to Mallaig on Scotland’s west coast. The journey is often heralded as the most scenic in the world, with the crossing of the stupendous Glenfinnan Viaduct sitting prominently among its many highlights. Don’t miss sight of Ben Nevis or the River Morar, the world’s shortest river.

After independent lunches in Mallaig, we make the return steam journey back to Fort William, treating ourselves to champagne and chocolates as we go. We arrive back at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 3

Following breakfast we depart for Helensburgh on the Firth of Clyde for a trip on the world's last sea-going paddle steamer, PS Waverley*. From here the venerable vessel takes us across the beautiful Kyles of Bute to the village of Tighnabruaich, where we pause to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

This afternoon a scenic coach journey leads us through the Argyllshire countryside, over the ferry to Gourock, across the elegant Erskine Bridge, and up to Loch Lomond Shores, for a chance to indulge in some luxury retail therapy. We return to our hotel, where we raise our glasses at this evening’s farewell dinner.

*Subject to confirmation of the Waverley’s sailing schedule

Day 4

Our final morning sees us embarking on a scenic tour through the glorious glen of the Trossachs. Arriving at Loch Katrine, we take to the waters for a cruise on the SS Sir Walter Scott, a vessel which has traversed this loch for well over 100 years; a splendid step back in time.

This afternoon we make our way back to our original pick-up points, as our wonderful group disperses.
