Whisky Tasting on Islay and Jura

5 Days

From £1995pp

Youthful? Perhaps. Balanced? Always. Well-rounded? Oh, yes. Join us for a wee dram — or more — of the ‘water of life’ in its ancestral home, where exciting developments are happening in the world of whisky...

As in oenological circles, forays into the world of whisky can be daunting. But our brand new whisky tour is by no means just for the experts — anyone who enjoys partaking of the good stuff will feel right at home. Join us on a journey both geological and sensory as we taste our way through the smoky malts of Islay and the sweet, peaty offerings of the Isle of Jura, as well as navigating the picturesque remote landscapes and scenic channels of Islay and Jura. There’ll be premium tours, of course, of distilleries both young and old. There’ll be tutored tastings, where you’ll learn how to swirl, smell, sip and swallow like a pro. And, at the end of the day, there’s a hotel bar stocked with rare and valuable whiskies to return to. Bliss.

Day 1

This morning, we meet in Glasgow where we’re joined by our tour manager, island expert Alastair Walker, before embarking on a series of scenic ferry crossings. After a stop for lunch in the village of Tarbert, we make our final ferry trip to Port Ellen and continue to our luxurious hotel, Islay House. This grand and historic country house features a bar stocked with rare and valuable whiskies — the ideal venue for our exclusive whisky tastings.

Day 2

This morning, we depart from the hotel for a visit to Kilchoman Distillery. We spend the morning on a premium tour — including a tutored tasting in the tasting room and a glass as a souvenir of your visit — which allows us to experience all that is great about the grassroots traditions of Scottish whisky distilling.

After lunch, we visit Port Charlotte, one of the most attractive villages on the island, and continue to the Museum of Islay Life for a short visit before we begin our guided tour the Bowmore Distillery.

We return to the hotel, where we will be joined by a senior member of staff from one of the local distilleries for a Q&A session and tutored tasting with several different expressions.

Day 3

After breakfast, we set sail for the neighbouring island of Jura, with wild seas on one side and calm bays on the other. Here, we tour the Jura Distillery in Craighouse, including a tasting of the distinctive varieties which have made a name for this small island in the wider whisky world. After lunch at the Jura Hotel we return to Islay where, our afternoon is free with the opportunity for shopping in Bowmore, where there are several whisky shops in which to while away the hours.

Day 4

This morning, we start the day with a visit to Bruichladdich Distillery for a private tour complete with tutored tasting of their flagship whisky, “The Classic Laddie”, a lighter-tasting offering than the heavily-peated whiskies from elsewhere on the island. After lunch, we visit the Laphraoig Distillery, where we spend a pleasant afternoon on a private tour followed by a tutored tasting. We return to our hotel for dinner.

Day 5

We check out of our hotel this morning and take the morning ferry to Kennacraig, back to the mainland. We enjoy one last lunch in Scottish style at the Loch Fyne Oyster Bay in Inveraray, before making our way back to Glasgow, where we part ways.
