Just as the gardens at Giverny inspired Monet, who spent half his life nurturing and enjoying them, so they continue to enthral countless visitors 90 years after his death.
While not everyone has visited the gardens at Giverny, they will almost certainly be familiar, thanks to one man in particular — the inimitable impressionist Claude Monet.
Giverny’s lovingly restored gardens offer a vivid impression of Monet’s favourite subjects. Cross Japanese bridges festooned with wisteria, and pass the draped fronds of willow which frame his iconic water lilies. A visit here is a surreal experience — art brought to life right before your eyes, beckoning you in to take a closer look. Of course, there’s more to this garden than just water lilies. Poppies, lupins, delphiniums and peonies have created an intoxicating atmosphere of abundant colour and luxuriant growth. No wonder Monet found so much inspiration here.
With so much here to remind us of his breathtaking works, it is only right that we also visit Paris’ Orangerie Museum during our tour. The perfect complement to Giverny, the centrepiece is Monet’s stunning series of murals, Les Nymphéas — a moving testament to the genius of a painter at the height of his powers. Art lovers and garden enthusiasts alike will feel at home on this tour.
We depart from London to Paris. On arrival we will be met by our comfortable local coach and we will enjoy a short guided tour of Paris. We then travel to the charming town of Chantilly, situated in the heart of the Chantilly Forest.
Our hotel, is set in its own wooded grounds on Avenue Francois Mathet. In the evening once you have settled into your room join our party for a welcome glass of Kir in the bar before dinner.
This morning we transfer to nearby Senlis, a pleasant market town typical of Picardy, where we have free time to wander around the shops or perhaps enjoy some pâtisserie. We continue to Château de Chantilly, a magnificent structure which stands on a rock surrounded by water. In October, we will instead spend the day at the Journée des Plantes at the Château de Chantilly. Hundreds of nurserymen from all over Europe display and sell their plants in the magnificent grounds of the Château. Courson displays exceptional collections of rare and unusual plants.
We will return to the hotel in time for dinner.
This morning, we depart for Giverny and the world famous house and gardens of Claude Monet. Our early start today will ensure an early arrival at Giverny - a time when the gardens are at their most tranquil. Both the house and gardens have been lovingly and accurately restored - one would believe that the family have just gone out to walk in the garden. You will have plenty of time to explore this marvellous garden at your leisure. Following our visit we enjoy free time in Giverny along with an opportunity to visit the little church where Monet is buried.
Dinner will be served at Château de Montvillargenne this evening
We travel to Paris to visit the Musée de l’Orangerie des Tuileries, which re-opened in May 2006 after an extensive refurbishment programme. The highlight of the museum’s impressive collection is undoubtedly the series of 2-metre high murals entitled Les Nymphéas. Thereafter you will have free time to shop and sightsee at your leisure. Paris is, of course, the most romantic city in the world with wonderful art galleries, churches, and shops.
Later, we return to the Gare du Nord for our Eurostar train back to London where we expect to arrive in the evening.
